The Church Is Its People: Gaudete Sunday with Bishop Bismarck Chau

Despite the winter weather, St. Anne’s Parish was deeply honored to welcome Bishop Pedro Bismarck Chau, Auxiliary Bishop of Newark, who celebrated the 12:00 noon Mass on Gaudete Sunday with our parish community.

Gaudete Sunday—marked by its call to rejoice—invites us to pause amid the season of waiting and remember the joy that comes from Christ’s nearness. Bishop Chau’s presence among us made this invitation especially meaningful, as his homily gently reminded us of a profound truth. While church buildings may be beautiful, the true Church is its people.

In his reflection, Bishop Chau emphasized that the Church is not defined by walls or structure alone, but by a living community—faithful people called to remain strong, united, and rooted in Christ. It is through our shared faith, our service to one another, and our joyful witness that the Church continues to grow and flourish.

His words resonated deeply with our parish, encouraging us to continue building a Church grounded in love, hope, and joyful discipleship, especially during this sacred season of Advent. The celebration was a powerful reminder that even amid challenges—whether winter weather or life’s uncertainties—we gather as one body, strengthened by faith and community.

St. Anne’s Parish is grateful for Bishop Chau’s visit and for the blessing of celebrating Gaudete Sunday together. May we carry forward this reminder as we continue our Advent journey: we are the Church, called to live the Gospel with joy and to reflect Christ’s light in the world.
